Bereavement Group

Contact Person: Lena Davis
E-mail: KEDAVIS@talktalk.net

Origin/roots of organization:
Commenced on the 30th September 1991 with Lena Davis and Peggy Stewart going to Ushaw College for a weekend course organized by Fr. Cunningham. We started a befriender group with bereavement support . Now the bereavement group consists of Lena Davis  tel. 0161-728-4889; Pat Barratt; tel. 789-1792; Nora McDonald; 794-4478;

We have meetings with Father Paul who lends support and on an occasion of bereavement informs the family that a member of the bereavement group will visit them after the funeral with a card and an offer of support. We do not consider ourselves counselors, simply a listening ear in the spirit of confidentiality. We are anxious to learn if this is beneficial to the parish and bereaved and would appreciate any feedback from the families we have visited.

Local origins/ date of foundation:
The first Mass for the recently deceased of the parish was held at Saint Charles Church on the 24th Nov. 2000 with the offer of a cup of tea in the presbytery after where people could talk about their bereaved. This has now become an annual event and is always very well attended.

Activities it undertakes:
It is an outreach group of the parish. On the occasion of bereavement in the parish, the Bereavement group will send a sympathy card on behalf of the parish community.

In the month of November we organise the Mass for the bereaved of the parish and recieve support from volunteers which we gracious appreciate.
